Nature’s Artistry: Exploring the Incredible Folds of the Ugab River Valley in Namibia

by Stephen King 3 Comments

In the remote wilderness of the Ugab River valley in Namibia, a stunning geological phenomenon can be observed: folds in the earth’s crust that reveal the powerful forces that shape our planet. These folds, which are the result of permanent deformation, have created a landscape unlike any other.

In structural geology, a fold is a stack of originally planar surfaces, such as sedimentary strata, that have been bent or curved during a permanent deformation. The folds in the Ugab River valley are a textbook example of this process, with layers of rock that have been twisted and contorted into complex patterns.

The folds are believed to have formed millions of years ago as a result of tectonic activity in the region, which caused the earth’s crust to buckle and warp. As the layers of rock were pushed and squeezed, they were deformed into the shapes that can be seen today.

The resulting landscape is a testament to the incredible power of geological forces, and a reminder of the vast scale and complexity of the natural world. For those with an interest in geology or the natural world, a visit to the Ugab River valley is a must-see experience, offering a glimpse into the incredible processes that have shaped our planet over millions of years.

Fascinating is a word that just does not cover this photo.

Sir David Attenborough suggests that to truly feel the magnificence of these works of art by Mother Nature, to travel to Namibia.

I’ve no doubt that is a truism, but for those of us, for whatever reason, are unable to do so, then I would ask that a trip to Namibia be one of his adventures offered on his Planet Earth programs.

I admire and respect Sir David Attenborough and if he has already showcased this on film, then please advise where we might view it.

Thank you Sir David, for your contribution to broadening the horizons of so many across our incredible Mother Earth.

More likely the folding occurred while the rock was still soft during or after the global flood of Noah’s day.

Bends do not occur unless the strata are hot. This fits the account given in Genesis 8.
