In a visual journey through the heart of Brazil’s diverse landscapes, photographer Ricardo Stuckert unveils striking images of indigenous tribes fighting to preserve the Amazon rainforest. These tribes, acting as guardians, navigate the threats posed by deforestation and outsiders seeking financial gain.

Stuckert’s lens captures a poignant snapshot of an 89-year-old tribe chief skillfully hunting with a bow and arrow in a shallow bay, showcasing the resilience ingrained in their way of life. Another image features an indigenous woman gracefully swimming underwater in a pristine river within the Chapada Imperial ecological sanctuary.

Being at one with nature is incredibly important to the indigenous people of Brazil. Portrait of a Brazilian beauty, right, captured when photographer Ricardo Stuckert first visited the Yanomami village in the state of Amazonas in 1997

Traveling across regions like Acre, Amazonas, Bahia, and Alagoas, Stuckert documents the efforts of indigenous people engaged in sustainable management projects and reforestation initiatives. These communities actively resist the encroachment of outsiders who exploit the rainforest for profit.

The devastating forest fires of 2020 intensified the threats faced by these tribes, as their very survival relies on the land now at risk. Stuckert’s photography, part of his ‘Brazilian Indians Project,’ aims to shed light on the challenges these indigenous communities confront, emphasizing the importance of their role as guardians of the forest.

Thousands of stars can be seen in the clear night’s sky. ‘I think it is important to disseminate Brazilian culture and show the way that native peoples live today,’ Ricardo said

Armed with a Canon EOS-1D X Mark II camera, a drone, and a GoPro, Stuckert beautifully captures the diversity and plurality of indigenous culture. His project seeks to break stereotypes, dispelling stigmas and showcasing a culture on the verge of being lost. Stuckert emphasizes the vital role of documentary photojournalism in portraying the significance of indigenous people in protecting the world’s forests.

Through his lens, Stuckert shares the rich multicultural tapestry of Brazil, a nation home to over 210 million people, nearly one million of whom belong to indigenous groups. The Brazilian Indians Project stands as a testament to the resilience of these tribes, urging the world to recognize their crucial role in preserving the Amazon rainforest and fostering harmony between nature and humanity.
