Careless Colorado tourist caught sneaking up on sleeping bull elk, with small child in tow

Estes Park, Colorado, renowned for its breathtaking scenery and as a gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park, witnessed a disturbing incident recently when a tourist was spotted dangerously close to a resting bull elk with her young child in tow. Oblivious to the potential peril, the woman seemed solely focused on capturing a snapshot of the tranquil creature, disregarding the safety of her child, who was positioned just two feet away from the powerful animal.

With an estimated population of around 2,400 elk inhabiting the Estes valley as of 2020, encounters with these majestic creatures are not uncommon. Despite their frequent presence, locals understand the importance of respecting the elk’s space and enlisting expert assistance when necessary to prevent any harm to both humans and animals. However, not all visitors exhibit the same level of caution.

A video documenting the alarming scene, shared via the Instagram account TouronsOfNationalParks—a platform highlighting irresponsible behavior in natural settings—has sparked widespread concern among viewers. Many expressed dismay at the parent’s disregard for the potential danger posed to her child by the nearby elk.

Commenters were quick to condemn the tourist’s actions, citing the inherent risks of startling a large, wild animal. “How incredibly unsafe,” remarked one observer, highlighting the potential danger of provoking a defensive response from the startled elk. Another commenter, drawing on their expertise as a former zookeeper and current wildlife rehabber, emphasized the serious consequences that could arise from such reckless behavior.

Authorities in Estes Park underscore the importance of respecting wildlife and adhering to safety guidelines, particularly during key periods such as calving and rutting seasons. Estes Park Police Chief Wes Kufeld emphasized the role of human behavior in elk-related incidents, noting that most issues stem from people encroaching too closely on the animals or causing disruptions, such as traffic jams, by stopping vehicles to take photographs.

In light of such incidents, prioritizing safety and responsible wildlife viewing practices is paramount. By exercising caution and maintaining a respectful distance from wildlife, visitors can ensure both their own well-being and the preservation of the natural environment they’ve come to appreciate.
