In a peculiar twist of events, Chinese astronaut Yang Liwei has disclosed an unusual experience during his inaugural space mission aboard the Shenzhou 5 spacecraft. According to recent reports from China Central Television, Yang Liwei recounted hearing sporadic knocking sounds during his 21-hour journey in space.
Describing the phenomenon, Yang Liwei likened the sound to someone gently tapping the body of the spacecraft with a wooden hammer against an iron bucket. Despite his initial apprehension upon hearing the mysterious knocks, Yang Liwei investigated by peering through the spacecraft’s porthole, only to find no discernible cause.
Interestingly, similar accounts of the enigmatic knocking sound were later reported by other Chinese astronauts on subsequent missions, including those aboard the Shenzhou 6 and 7 spacecraft in 2005 and 2008, respectively.
Speculation regarding the origin of the noise ranges from potential impacts of space debris to the spacecraft’s structural response to the extreme temperatures of space. However, definitive explanations remain elusive.
This incident is reminiscent of previous unexplained auditory phenomena in space exploration history, such as the Apollo 10 crew’s encounter with mysterious whistling sounds during their lunar orbit in 1969, attributed to radio interference.
While theories abound, including speculative notions of extraterrestrial origins, experts suggest a more prosaic explanation rooted in the spacecraft’s design or environmental factors.
