Outrage Erupts After Elephant Painted Bright Pink for Photo Shoot Dies Months Later

A Russian photographer is facing intense backlash after an elephant she painted bright pink for a controversial photo shoot in India died several months later, reigniting debate over the use of animals in commercial photography.

Photographer Julia Buruleva, 47, became the focus of widespread criticism after images from the project resurfaced following the death of the 65-year-old elephant involved in the shoot. While there is currently no evidence linking the animal’s death to the photo session, the incident has sparked anger among animal welfare advocates and social media users across India and beyond.

Buruleva insists the elephant died of old age and says the paint used during the project was organic, locally produced, and commonly used during traditional festivals. She maintains that the materials were safe for the animal and caused no harm.

The project itself had already generated controversy due to its unusual artistic concept, which featured models painted pink posing alongside the brightly colored elephant. According to Buruleva, finding participants willing to take part proved difficult because of cultural sensitivities surrounding the shoot.

As criticism intensified, the photographer claimed she began receiving thousands of hostile messages, including threats directed at her family, friends, and collaborators. She later launched an online campaign seeking public support, arguing that the backlash had escalated beyond criticism into harassment.

Animal welfare groups, however, say the controversy highlights broader concerns about using animals as props for entertainment, advertising, and social media content. Many critics argue that elderly animals should not be subjected to cosmetic alterations or commercial photo shoots, regardless of whether physical harm can be proven.

The elephant’s death has fueled an emotional public debate in India, where elephants hold deep cultural and spiritual significance. While investigations have found no confirmed connection between the photo shoot and the animal’s passing, the images continue to provoke strong reactions online.

Why Animal Welfare in Tourism and Entertainment Matters

The controversy has renewed global discussions about animal welfare, wildlife tourism, ethical photography, conservation, and the treatment of captive animals. Experts increasingly warn that social media trends, commercial photo shoots, and entertainment industries can place unnecessary stress on animals. As public awareness grows, many travelers and consumers are demanding stronger animal protection laws, ethical tourism standards, wildlife conservation programs, and responsible treatment of elephants and other vulnerable species worldwide.
