“She had a natural talent for it.”
Meet Layla, a 2-year-old golden retriever who brightens every place she walks into.
Layla was discovered dirty and alone in a gas station parking lot by an animal rescue. They didn’t know much about her background or how long she’d been there, but they knew they could help her.
After a few weeks, the former stray found her forever home and began her modeling career, bringing joy to millions – and her new mother is her biggest fan.
“I started taking Layla to work with me at the PetSmart home office soon after adopting her, and she was fantastic,” Layla’s mother, Rebecca Crews, told The Dodo. “She’s the ideal office companion.”
Crews works on the company’s social media team and needed a naturally photogenic pooch, so Layla stepped in while she continued her search.
“She had a natural talent for it, which is why I began volunteering her for additional photo sessions,” Crews explained. “She receives a treat between takes, gets to play with a toy while changing outfits, and, of course, gets tons of pets from the team.”
Crews first encountered Layla on the spur of the moment while travelling home from work. She hadn’t intended to expand her family, but fate had other plans.
“I passed a brand-new-looking rescue called Heidi’s Village in Phoenix, Arizona,” Crews explained. “I quickly noticed [Layla] when I was returned to the kennels.”
Crews decided to proceed with the adoption after consulting with her husband. She couldn’t get Layla out of her head and knew she’d be right at home. Layla appeared to agree when they met.

Layla now spends her days as her mother’s best work buddy. Crews has larger hopes for her sweet baby, whose images have appeared in several of the company’s advertisements.
“We aim to get Layla certified as a therapy dog because she is so wonderful,” Crews added. “She is absolutely adored by us.”
