An octopus has been caught on camera changing color while sleeping, which experts believe is due to it dreaming.
Who knew our eight-legged sea creature companions could dream?
The film, which was shot for PBS’s upcoming documentary Octopus: Making Contact, shows the mystery creature sleeping and changing colors from grey to yellow to practically invisible as it blends into the ocean.
Dr. David Scheel, a scientist, speculates on what the octopus could be dreaming about. He speaks quietly as he narrates:
“When she spots a crab, her color begins to shift somewhat. Then she becomes completely dark. When octopuses leave the bottom, they will do so. This is a camouflage, as if she recently tamed a crab and is now going to sit and eat it while hoping no one notices her. … This is quite intriguing. But, if she’s dreaming, she’s dreaming.”
It’s a school day every day.
