An Ancient Species of Wild Dog Formerly Thought to Be Extinct Has Been Unearthed

Biologists all over are celebrating today over finding out that a species of dog thought to be long extinct actually is not.

The reintroduction of the New Guinea highland wild dog to the island in the South Pacific has been confirmed.

These are currently thought to be the most endangered canine species in the planet, and conservation efforts are underway.

At this time, over a hundred photographs have been taken by camera traps placed up in 2016. They reveal that at least 15 of them are still alive, including males, females, and puppies.

The majority of them are golden, but they may also be cream, roan, or black with diverse markings and patterns.

Aside from discovering that the famed singing dogs of New Guinea are close cousins of the highland wild dog, it was also determined that they are the most ancient dog species currently alive. They might possibly be a direct progenitor of domesticated dogs.

“The discovery and confirmation of the [highland wild dog] for the first time in over half a century is not only exciting but an incredible opportunity for science,” said the New Guinea Highland Wild Dog Foundation (NGHWDF).
