For years, millions of people watched Jackie through a livestream, following her every season, every challenge and every new chick she raised.
Now, the beloved bald eagle is gone — and the mystery surrounding the illness that claimed her life remains.
Jackie, the famous bald eagle who became an internet sensation after nesting in California’s Big Bear Valley, died early Monday morning, August 10, at the Ojai Raptor Center in Ojai, California. She was 14.
The news was announced by the Ojai Raptor Center and shared by Friends of Big Bear Valley, the nonprofit that has followed and documented Jackie’s life for years.
Despite intensive treatment, Jackie’s condition had continued to deteriorate.
“Over the past several days, her condition continued to deteriorate despite intensive treatment and the combined efforts of our veterinary team and consulting specialists,” the center wrote. “She remained critically ill, receiving oxygen therapy, supportive treatment, and around-the-clock monitoring in our intensive care unit. Throughout her time at Ojai Raptor Center, every decision was guided by the available medical evidence, her welfare, and our responsibility to do what was in her best interest.”
Jackie’s death came after weeks of uncertainty about what was happening inside her body.
She had been found injured on July 17 near Dana Point Park after an apparent confrontation with two younger eagles. Witness video showed Jackie fighting back, even turning onto her back and using her powerful talons to defend herself.
But although she managed to drive the other eagles away, Jackie was unable to fly normally and was taken to the Ojai Raptor Center for treatment.
There, veterinarians discovered that she was suffering from severe anemia.
Her condition became increasingly unstable in early August. By August 9, her packed cell volume had fallen below six percent before briefly increasing to nine percent.
Yet the most troubling question remained unanswered: What had caused Jackie to become so sick in the first place?
Veterinarians carried out extensive testing, including a CT scan and a bone marrow biopsy, but were unable to identify the underlying illness.
The center said it was consulting with federal and California wildlife officials and planned to release more information about Jackie’s treatments and test results.
“We know this news will be deeply felt by the many thousands of people around the world who have followed her journey, hoped alongside us, prayed for her, and supported the people caring for her,” the raptor center staff wrote. “Our team is heartbroken. It has been an extraordinary privilege to care for her.”
Jackie’s story had captivated viewers for more than a decade.
She was born in Big Bear Valley in 2012 to bald eagles Ricky and Lucy. Before her arrival, no bald eagle chicks were known to have hatched in the valley during the previous nesting seasons.
Beginning in the mid-2010s, cameras allowed people around the world to watch the eagles’ lives unfold in real time.
Jackie eventually became the resident female at the nest and later paired with Shadow, the male who would become her longtime mate.
Together, Jackie and Shadow raised several chicks, giving viewers an intimate look at the beauty — and sometimes harsh reality — of life in the wild.
Their first successful chicks together arrived in 2019, followed by another in 2022. Their eggs failed to hatch in both 2023 and 2024.
Then came 2025.
Jackie laid three eggs, all of which hatched in early March. But a powerful snowstorm brought as much as two feet of snow and battered the nest with strong winds. Only two of the chicks, Sunny and Gizmo, survived.
This year brought another difficult chapter.
Two of Jackie’s first eggs were destroyed by ravens. She later laid another pair, which successfully hatched in April.
The chicks were eventually named Luna and Sandy, with Sandy honoring former Friends of Big Bear Valley executive director Sandy Steers, who died from cancer earlier this year.
Those two chicks are now part of Jackie’s final legacy.
For many viewers, Jackie was more than a wild bird appearing on a camera. She became a familiar presence in their daily lives — a symbol of resilience, motherhood and the fragile beauty of nature.
Her story even inspired people to take action to protect the land surrounding her habitat. Friends of Big Bear Valley helped launch a major effort to preserve property near Jackie’s nest that had been threatened by development. The campaign ultimately helped secure 63 acres for conservation.
Now, Jackie’s remains have been transferred to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife as experts continue working to understand what happened to her.
“Soar free Jackie,” Friends of Big Bear Valley wrote.
And while the exact cause of her mysterious illness may not yet be known, the impact Jackie had on the people who watched her life unfold is impossible to measure.
For millions of viewers who followed her journey, she wasn’t simply a bald eagle on a livestream. She was Jackie — a mother, a survivor and a remarkable symbol of the wild world they had come to care about.
