Guy Builds Decoy To Scare Birds — But They End Up ‘Worshipping’ It Instead

In an attempt to deter local birds from frequenting his Australian home and pilfering his cat’s outdoor food bowl, Giulio Cuzilla embarked on a creative endeavor that inadvertently turned his porch into an unexpected avian congregation point. The plan was to craft a homemade owl as a menacing decoy, but what transpired was an unintentional “worship” ceremony by a group of magpies.

Cuzilla’s decision to construct a faux owl seemed like a practical solution to the bird-related nuisances he was facing. Little did he anticipate the surprising turn of events that awaited him.

Upon deploying the handcrafted owl sentinel on his porch, instead of witnessing a dispersal of magpies, Cuzilla found the birds gathering en masse. In a whimsical twist, the magpies seemed almost reverential, appearing to genuflect before the inanimate avian guardian. In Cuzilla’s words, “I accidentally made a magpie god.”

Animal behaviorist Gisela Kaplan sheds light on the peculiar behavior, dispelling the notion of bird worship. According to Kaplan, the magpies aren’t expressing admiration for the owl deity; rather, they are asserting their dominance and territorial rights. In their bold and intelligent manner, the magpies are essentially telling the new “intruder” to vacate their space.

“They give these warnings and say, ‘Do you mind? You’re in our territory, you should leave,'” Kaplan explains. “Some of their calls are just diplomatic niceties indicating, ‘You’re stepping on our turf.’ And that’s what they’re doing.”

Magpies, known for their intelligence and audacity, are not easily intimidated, even by clever human-made deterrents like Cuzilla’s owl. Their assertive behavior reflects their territorial instincts and their knack for vocalizing their displeasure at perceived intrusions.

In an unexpected turn of events, Cuzilla, initially aiming to discourage the magpies, has come to appreciate their unique and endearing qualities. Reflecting on his change of heart, he acknowledges the birds’ charming nature and amusing antics, describing them as “pretty cute.”

This avian encounter serves as a reminder that nature’s response to human interventions can be unpredictable, turning a simple scare tactic into a delightful display of bird behavior. As Cuzilla’s porch inadvertently becomes a gathering place for magpies, it showcases the intelligence and social dynamics of these feathered visitors, turning an attempt at deterrence into a lighthearted appreciation of nature’s quirks.
