Obie, abandoned dog who was found tied up to tree, finally adopted after 60 days

Last month we reported on the story of Obie, a sweet dog who was found abandoned and tied up to a tree before being taken in by the Tyler Regional Animal Care Shelter.

In the weeks since Obie’s story made headlines, he’s been patiently waiting for the right home — and now, there’s been an inspiring update to the story.

On April 22, Obie was discovered in the Frank Niederwerfer Wildlife Sanctuary, in South Windsor, Connecticut, by a bystander who found the dog tied up to the limb of a tree.

The dog was mostly in good health, though his eyes were red and his neck was straining against the collar, according to CT Insider. His collar tag listed his name as “Kobe,” which was later altered to Obie.

Obie was taken in by Tyler Regional Animal Care Shelter, and he was neutered, microchipped and received his vaccines. Despite everything he had been through, Obie was described as a sweet, friendly dog.

“His eyes are almost healed, and he is learning manners and personal space,” the TRACS wrote on Facebook. “He is LOVING all the attention from every person that meets him.”

Meanwhile, an investigation was launched, and Obie’s former owner, 26-year-old Janiya Bradford of Manchester, Connecticut, turned herself in and was reportedly charged with cruelty to animals, per NBC Connecticut.

Obie was soon placed up for adoption, and while the story brought the dog widespread attention, the shelter made it a priority to find him just the right home. Obie isn’t fond of men, so he needed to be in a female-only household, with someone who could give him a safe space to decompress.

The search continued for weeks: “We have had 2 meet and greets, and 1 no call, no show. With no fault on Obie, they just were not the right fit,” TRACS wrote on June 18.

But finally, exactly 60 days after Obie arrived at the shelter, they announced the good news everyone had been waiting for: Obie was adopted!

The shelter wrote that Obie’s new owner had met all the specific criteria they were looking for.

In another post, they wrote that Obie is “is settling into his new home and his new routine,” and his new doggy brother Lovebug was helping him feel right at home.

“It’s happy endings like this that make the long wait worth it!”

Obie’s story broke our hearts, but we’re glad he’s doing so well now and has finally been adopted! Enjoy your new home, Obie! ❤️🥰
