Rescuing an animal is one of the best things you can do. Even the biggest celebrities have had their lives change by bringing home a shelter pet.

Recently, Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong’o became the latest celeb to bring home a rescue cat. While the star says she used to be afraid of cats, her new pet has been just what she needed.

On October 28, the Black Panther actress shared an Instagram post announcing that she adopted a cat named Yoyo from Best Friends Adoption Center.

Nyong’o had been fostering the shelter cat, but knew after three days that she “could not give him up” and officially adopted him.

“I have historically been afraid of cats, but when my life was altered instantly recently, a little voice whispered to me that it was time to embrace change and new possibilities,” Nyong’o, an Oscar-winner for 12 Years a Slave, wrote in her post.

The announcement comes after Nyong’o, who won an Oscar for her breakout role in 2013’s 12 Years a Slave, wrote that she was experiencing “a season of heartbreak because of a love suddenly and devastatingly extinguished by deception,” reportedly related to a breakup with TV host and journalist Selema Masekela.

“I am reminded that the magnitude of the pain I am feeling is equal to the measure of my capacity for love,” she wrote on October 19. “And so, I am choosing to face the pain, cultivating the courage to meet my life exactly as it is, and trusting that this too shall pass.”

It seems that adopting a cat was the perfect way to get over the bad breakup, and Nyong’o is now a proud cat mom.

“I never understood people whose phones were full of photos and videos of their pets – now I am one of those people!” she wrote. “It may look like I saved Yoyo, but really, Yoyo is saving me.”

The actress wrote that Yoyo loves food and company, is “extremely careful and rarely drops things,” is “very picky about his wand toys” and “can’t be trusted around supplements.” She also said he was very good at catching bugs.
