In a spine-chilling encounter, Andrew McLeay stumbled upon what initially seemed like an ordinary scene in his car. Little did he know, he was about to come face to face with an eerie spectacle involving what appeared to be two colossal spiders.
Andrew, a resident of Victoria, Australia, was going about his day when he made a startling discovery. While retrieving an item from his vehicle, his eyes fell upon the unexpected sight of two huntsman spiders entangled with each other, suspended from the car’s roof.
The 54-year-old recounted the moment he laid eyes on the unnerving sight, expressing how his skin began to crawl at the mere sight of the creepy crawlies. “I had no idea what was going on at first,” he admitted. “I went to get something from my car and noticed it.”
Speculating on the spiders’ activities, Andrew pondered whether they were engaged in a fierce battle or perhaps involved in mating rituals. His mind raced with questions about how they had infiltrated his car and how long they had made it their secret dwelling. “I’m terrified of them by the way,” he added, reflecting the common sentiment of arachnophobia.
Initially assuming the spiders to be motionless, Andrew’s terror intensified when one of them suddenly sprang to life. “I managed to get the bottom one to slowly lower into a container with a single line of web,” he described. “The top one I thought had been dead for ages because it looked dried up. Contrary to his initial belief, it wasn’t a pair of huntsman spiders entangled but rather a single spider shedding its exoskeleton, a phenomenon rarely observed.
Biologist Jake Giannino, familiar with such occurrences, dubbed it a “once in a lifetime” event. Reflecting on the rarity of the encounter, he remarked, “It’s something really interesting that is rarely witnessed. For squeamish people, it’s probably weird to look at, but pretty interesting too.”
Following the unsettling ordeal, Andrew took measures to liberate the spider, along with its discarded skin, into the safety of his garden.
