The Egg Carton Gardening Trick: A Simple Method for Planting Onions with Perfect Spacing

by Stephen King Leave a Comment

Planting onions doesn’t have to be complicated. Gardeners have discovered a clever and simple technique that uses something many people already have at home — paper egg cartons.

This method helps create neat rows, maintain proper spacing, and reduce weeds at the same time. The egg cartons act as a natural grid and biodegradable mulch that gradually breaks down as the onions grow.

Here’s how the simple egg carton planting method works.

Why Use Egg Cartons for Planting Onions?

Paper egg carton trays can function as natural spacers for onion sets. When placed on prepared soil, each cup marks a planting spot, helping gardeners keep consistent spacing between plants.

Because the cartons are made from biodegradable paper pulp, they slowly decompose in the soil while helping block sunlight that would normally allow weeds to grow.

This method works best for:

  • Onion sets (small dormant bulbs)
  • Green onions or scallions
  • Small garden beds where spacing and weed control are important

However, plastic or foam cartons should not be used because they do not break down in soil.

Materials You’ll Need

Before starting, gather the following items:

  • Paper egg carton trays
  • Onion sets or small onion transplants
  • Garden soil mixed with compost or aged manure
  • A rake or shovel for soil preparation
  • Watering can or garden hose
  • Optional fertilizer for early growth

Step 1: Choose the Right Onion Variety

Different onions grow best in different regions depending on day length.

There are three main types:

  • Long-day onions – best for northern regions
  • Short-day onions – ideal for southern climates
  • Day-neutral onions – adaptable for many areas

Gardeners also recommend choosing smaller onion sets because very large ones may bolt, producing flower stalks instead of large bulbs.

Step 2: Prepare the Garden Bed

Healthy soil is the key to successful onion growth.

Start by removing weeds and loosening the soil about 6–8 inches deep. Mix in compost to improve nutrients and drainage. Onions grow best in loose, well-drained soil.

Make sure the soil surface is level so the egg cartons sit flat on the bed.

Step 3: Place the Egg Carton Trays

Lay the paper egg carton trays directly on the prepared soil in the area where you want to plant.

If the trays feel stiff, lightly moisten them so they mold to the ground. You can also poke a few extra holes in the bottoms to help onion roots grow through more easily.

Step 4: Plant the Onion Sets

Place one onion set in each cup with the pointed side facing upward.

For larger bulb onions, gardeners often plant every other cup to give each plant enough space to grow. For green onions or scallions, planting in every cup works well.

Proper spacing allows onions to form larger bulbs and prevents overcrowding.

Step 5: Cover with Soil

Cover the onion sets lightly with soil.

The ideal depth is about ½ to 1 inch. Onions should not be planted too deeply because that can slow bulb development and increase the risk of rot.

After adding soil, gently press it down so it fills the spaces in the tray without packing too tightly.

Step 6: Water and Maintain the Plants

Water thoroughly after planting to help settle the soil around the onion sets.

Onions generally need about one inch of water per week, either from rainfall or watering. Consistent moisture helps plants develop strong leaves and healthy bulbs.

Gardeners often apply light fertilizer during early growth to encourage leaf production, which directly affects bulb size.

Step 7: Control Weeds Naturally

One major advantage of the egg carton method is natural weed control.

The trays block sunlight from reaching many weed seeds, which reduces weed growth around young onion plants. However, occasional weeding may still be necessary to keep the bed healthy.

When to Harvest Onions

Green onions can be harvested early once they reach pencil thickness.

For full bulb onions, harvest when the plant tops begin to fall over and turn yellow. This indicates the bulbs have reached maturity.

After harvesting, onions should be cured in a warm, dry area for about two weeks before storage.

Why Gardeners Love This Method

The egg carton planting technique has become popular among home gardeners because it offers several benefits:

  • Perfect spacing between onion plants
  • Reduced weed growth
  • Biodegradable materials that enrich the soil
  • Simple setup with household items

With minimal effort, this method can produce a tidy garden bed and healthy onion harvest.

Home gardening continues to grow in popularity as more people look for sustainable ways to produce fresh food. Simple techniques like composting, natural pest control, and efficient planting methods can help gardeners improve soil health while reducing chemical use. Growing vegetables at home not only saves money but also supports healthier eating and environmentally friendly gardening practices.
