“On a very terrible night, [I] will never forget her commitment and valor.”
Brian Myers never expected a shelter dog to repay the favor when he rescued her life in September.
Sadie, a six-year-old German shepherd, was surrendered to the Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge in New Jersey last summer. The senior dog appeared befuddled and bewildered at the shelter.
Although the shelter workers could see Sadie was a devoted and clever dog, her fear of males and protective attitude made it difficult to find her a new home.
Heather Centrella, the front office manager at Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge, told The Dodo, “[She] was a little standoffish when she first came and she wasn’t sure what was going on.” “In the shelter, she got a little shut-down, so we thought she’d require an experienced home with someone who could be gentle with her.”
Brian Myers arrived into the shelter a month later and instantly recognized Sadie. He decided to improve things after realizing she had troubles with guys.
Myers posted on Facebook, “I knew she was a fantastic puppy and I chose to adopt her in the first 30 minutes.” “She hopped into my car, and we’ve become fast friends.” I was able to work through her problems and promised to provide her with the home and affection she needed.”
Myers and Sadie grew to be best friends and extremely close. However, just a few months later, Sadie came dangerously close to losing her family for the second time.
Myers and Sadie were alone at home one night when he had a stroke. When Myers slumped on the ground, Sadie refused to leave his side, realizing how much pain he was in. She licked his face to keep him awake and screamed for help to notify the rest of the neighborhood.
Sadie knew it was up to her to bring her father to safety because Myers couldn’t handle it. When Myers grabbed Sadie’s collar, the faithful dog knew just what to do: she began pulling him across the room to his phone.
“She was upset because she realized I was in danger,” Myers added. “I grabbed her collar, and she realized she had to help me obtain the aid I needed.” [She] started pulling with all of her might. I was able to go across the floor with her assistance to get my phone.”
Myers is now out of the hospital and in a rehabilitation facility, where he is attempting to recover. Sadie is living with her father’s relatives while he is abroad, anxiously down the minutes till she can see him again.
“They FaceTime,” Centrella added, “which he claimed she’s a little puzzled about because she wants to yell at her father and she tears.” “However, he promises her that he is doing all in his power to return to her as soon as possible so they may be reunited.”
Myers believes that by sharing his story, people will see how amazing shelter dogs can be. He never gave up on Sadie, and she never gave up on him, even at his darkest hour.
Myers added, “I miss her dearly and can’t wait to see her and love her even more than I already do.” “I pledge to give her the finest life possible, and I will never forget her bravery and loyalty on such a terrifying night.”
