Maryland environmental nonprofit A time-lapse video of oysters purifying the waters of an estuary on the east coast was produced by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. The bivalves are crucial to the ecosystem’s upkeep, so it was worrying when their population fell to as little as 4% of what it normally was.
Adult oysters are capable of pumping and straining up to two gallons of water in an hour. The simple act of eating makes them the bay’s most effective filtration system.
