There are many things to like about foxes. Their lovely features, fluffy coats, and lively behaviors make them irresistible. But there’s something else about them that sets them apart. They have the ability to laugh in the same way that we do. A fox rescue organization situated in Minnesota Save A Fox released a video of one of their red foxes smiling with glee as it was scritched on the tummy.
The high-pitched titters at first appear to be human noises. However, as you watch, you’ll notice that the sounds are being made by a fox named Finnegan. As Mikayla Raines, the creator of Save A Fox, diligently rubs his fur, he even smiles. It’s clear that it’s a highlight of his day for him as well as the fox expert, who coos at him throughout the movie.
Raines has almost ten years of experience dealing with foxes. “After taking in a tame pet fox some years ago, I discovered the world of domestic foxes,” she adds. “Unlike wild foxes, domestic foxes are born in captivity to be sold as pets and are bred in ‘fur farms’ for the selling of their pelts. Due to legal and ethical concerns, foxes produced in captivity cannot be released into the wild.”
Raines launched Save A Fox in 2017 after noticing an excess of pet foxes in need of homes. “Many of our foxes at Save A Fox originate from fur farms, as pet surrenders, or have been confiscated from their owners as a consequence of an unlawful scenario and then brought to us,” she continues. So far, her efforts have saved roughly 150 foxes, including the charismatic Finnegan.
