Yellowstone mom turns her back on a bison, then urges her child closer despite warnings

Drawing severe backlash, a recent Yellowstone National Park video captures a stunning scene unfolding. Despite clear warnings across the park that inform visitors not to get too close to wildlife, an adult woman appeared to wave a small child over for a photo near a large, wild bison. The footage, originally shared by the Instagram account Tourons of National Parks, showed the woman posing beside the resting bison with her back completely to it, raising her hands to imitate horns. She then seemed to beckon the young child to step closer and join her beside the wild animal.

As the dangerous scene unfolded, the stunned person filming could be heard repeating, “not the kid, not the kid,” adding a desperate, “no, no, no, no,” as the adult waved the child closer. According to the video’s caption, when the child moved closer to the animal, the person filming began to get out of their vehicle to warn them about the danger. Fortunately, by the time they stepped out, a park ranger was already approaching to intervene.

Yellowstone’s wildlife rules are in place for a crucial reason. The National Park Service explicitly tells visitors to stay at least 25 yards from animals like bison and elk, and 100 yards from bears and wolves. Those distances are meant to protect people, but they also profoundly help protect animals from being forced into dangerous situations. These reckless encounters can affect everyone else trying to enjoy public lands responsibly. Rangers may have to intervene, visitors can be endangered by a sudden charge, and animals can be heavily stressed or displaced from their natural surroundings.

People in the comment section were stunned by the footage. “I wish people would leave the animals alone,” one user wrote, while another simply added, “Very dangerous.” Some warned that placing a child in such close proximity to a wild animal is extremely dangerous and could easily result in official consequences. Others pointed out the tragic reality that if the wild animal reacted to the stress, there was a high risk it would have to be euthanized.
