Dogs, with their improved sense of smell, have proven essential in assisting the Ukrainian army in combating the Russian invasion. In Ukraine, brave puppies have even been honored with medals for their abilities to discover and remove hazardous devices. The Ukrainian army just acquired a new canine member to its ranks, and he arrived via Russia. Russian forces abandoned a 3-year-old Belgian Shepherd, who is now assisting Ukrainian defensive operations.
Max, the dog, was in bad shape when he was discovered near the Mykolaiv region in southern Ukraine. He had previously served in the Russian army, but was discharged after the Russians conquered a nearby settlement and then fled. Max, who was starving but living on rotten food, was rescued by a local Ukrainian family. Before handing him over to the Ukrainian National Guard, they took him home and nursed him back to health.
Max arrived understanding only Russian orders, but he has subsequently picked up Ukrainian. The dog is highly clever and agile, and has been repurposed for minesweeping after immediately becoming a favorite of the guards. “We don’t understand why the Russians would leave such a beautiful animal behind,” one soldier explained. “Ukrainians adore dogs and consider them members of the family.”
The National Guard thanked the family that assisted in bringing Max to them in a Facebook post. “We owe a debt of gratitude to the family, for whom the choice between giving the dog to the Ukrainian military or selling it for a lump amount, as they were given, was never a question!” Max will now serve on the right flank, defending Ukraine and biting Russian [backs].”
