For a day, a rather odd-looking black cat known on social media for her huge yellow eyes and duck-footed paws was the mayor of Hell. Allow me to explain. Anyone can become mayor of Hell, Michigan, a small town northwest of Ann Arbor, for $100, and the town got its first feline ruler on April 24.
Jinx, the cat’s name, lives in California with her owner, Mia, who rescued her in 2018. “I wasn’t looking for a cat,” Mia admits. When Mia returned home early from a football game, she found a cat waiting for her. “I discovered her after hearing meowing in my backyard.” She was only three weeks old and tiny.”
It didn’t take Mia long to notice Jinx was different. “She had big eyes that didn’t get smaller as she grew bigger, and I also noticed she had big feet.” Mia learned from the vet that, while Jinx was born with these defects that give her such a distinct appearance, she is perfectly healthy, if clumsy. “She only learned to stand on her own a year ago,” Mia says.
Jinx has amassed a sizable social media following, particularly on TikTok, where she has over 700,000 adoring fans. The idea for Jinx to be “mayor of Hell” for a day came from a Twitter response—Mia had heard of other pets becoming mayors and tweeted asking if anyone knew how to make Jinx mayor, and someone mentioned the small Michigan town. A mayoral proclamation certificate, a Hell souvenir mug, a souvenir shirt, a certificate of impeachment, and even property ownership in Hell—one square inch, to be exact—are all part of the honor.
