A Woman Travels Around The World By Exchanging Cat-Sitting For Free Lodging

Where would you travel in the world if you didn’t have to pay for lodging? Madolline Gourley, an Australian writer, discovered a clever travel hack that allows her to exchange cat-sitting services for a place to stay. Gourley has been able to travel across Australia and the United States for the price of her plane ticket.

“I discovered house sitting a few years ago, and it’s allowed me to stay in cities all over the United States and Australia for next to nothing since then.” “You house or pet sit for ‘free’ in exchange for accommodation as a sitter,” Gourley explains. The 31-year-old writer finds work through TrustedHouseSitters, where her years of experience caring for cats helps her beat out the competition. She has her own blog, One Cat At a Time, where she discusses her various destinations and answers questions from readers about how they, too, can get started. Gourley estimates that she has saved approximately $28,000 in hotel expenses thus far.

“While house and cat sitting for strangers has saved me thousands of dollars in lodging costs, I still need money to pay for things like airfare to and from sits.” “That means I spend the other, less exciting part of my life working a regular Monday to Friday job in Brisbane, Australia, saving money for my next adventure,” she says on her website. Gourley’s most recent trip was a 75-day journey across the United States, from Seattle to Brooklyn. “I’ve had 15 cats and nine different homes in seven different cities across the country.”

“I began in Seattle before moving on to Austin, New York City (where I got sits in Chelsea, South Park Slope, and Prospect Heights), Salt Lake City, Denver, Chicago, and Portland,” she adds. Her next destination is a lengthy trip to Canada.
