Eucalyptus trees are widely recognized for their fragrant leaves and as the primary food source for koalas, but few know about the dazzling beauty of Eucalyptus deglupta. Known as the rainbow eucalyptus, this mesmerizing tree sheds its bark in a way that resembles a sharpened colored pencil, revealing a spectacular array of colors.

Also called Mindanao gum or rainbow gum, this species is the only eucalyptus found in rainforests and one of just four that exist outside of Australia. Native to the Philippines, Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea, the rainbow eucalyptus can reach towering heights of up to 250 feet. While its massive size is impressive, it is the vivid, multicolored bark that steals the show.

As the tree sheds its outer bark, a smooth, bright green inner layer emerges. Over time, this layer matures into a variety of shades, including blue, purple, orange, and deep maroon. This natural transformation occurs because the tree sheds its bark gradually rather than all at once, creating a stunning, multicolored striped pattern.

Where Can You Find Rainbow Eucalyptus?

The enchanting appearance of the rainbow eucalyptus has made it a favorite among botanical gardens and landscape enthusiasts. While it thrives in tropical rainforests, it has also been successfully planted in Hawaii, Texas, Louisiana, and Southern California, where it flourishes in frost-free climates.

Commercial Value Beyond Its Beauty

Despite its stunning aesthetics, the rainbow eucalyptus is not just a visual marvel—it also has high commercial value. The tree is extensively cultivated in tree plantations as a source of pulpwood for white paper production. Next time you reach for a blank sheet of paper, imagine its origins in the vibrant bark of this remarkable tree.
