For weeks, a small dog slept in a shoebox beside a house, and the people living there did what they could: they kept her fed. What rescuers found when they finally lifted her out explains why she never left.
A Shoebox Beside a House
The puppy, described as a Chihuahua, had made a shoebox beside a building her shelter. The homeowners noticed her and began feeding her. The routine went on for several weeks, and the homeowners contacted two different animal shelters looking for answers. Nobody knew where she had come from or why she was alone.

Hope for Paws Steps In
Eldad Hagar and Loreta Frankonyte of Hope for Paws took on the case. When they lifted her from the box, they found she was missing a leg, and she was too weak to move. The dog, later named Princess, was missing one of her forelegs. The rescuers wrapped her in a towel and drove her to an animal hospital.

More Than a Missing Leg
The vet found that the missing limb was only part of it. Princess was covered in fleas and very dirty, and she got a much-needed bath. Then it emerged that she also had severe anemia, which made her condition more serious. She needed intensive monitoring and care, and received it.

How Did She End Up There?
None of the accounts we reviewed explain how Princess lost her leg or how she came to be alone. That part of the story remains unanswered.

What Happened Next
Princess recovered. She was soon running around on three legs and seemed to enjoy the people around her. In March 2017, Hope for Paws announced that she had found a foster home. A later update says she has since found her forever home.

Weeks of daily meals kept a very sick puppy going. It took a specialist rescue team to get her the medical care she needed.
