Arrests in Shanxi: Two Culprits Behind Great Wall of China Damage

In the Shanxi region of China, two people drilled a hole in the Great Wall of China “to make a shortcut”.

In a shocking incident that has sent shockwaves across the world, two individuals have been arrested for causing significant harm to one of UNESCO’s treasured World Heritage Sites – the Great Wall of China. The incident, which unfolded in Shanxi province, China, has been described as “irreversible damage” to this iconic structure.

Local authorities have identified the suspects as a 38-year-old man named Zheng and a 55-year-old woman named Wang. Their alleged crime? Using an excavator to dig a gaping hole in the Great Wall, all in an ill-conceived attempt to create a shortcut for their nearby construction project.

The consequences of their actions are nothing short of catastrophic. A section of the Great Wall, dating back to the Ming Dynasty (AD 1368-1644), specifically known as the 32nd Great Wall, bore the brunt of their destructive efforts. This segment not only holds historical significance but also includes a relatively well-preserved watchtower, listed as a provincial cultural relic.

The damage inflicted by the duo has been described as “irreversible,” compromising the structural integrity of the Great Wall itself and jeopardizing the safety of invaluable cultural relics.

Local authorities acted swiftly upon receiving reports of the damage, apprehending the two suspects in Yuyou County, Shanxi province. Currently, both Zheng and Wang have been criminally detained, and the investigation into this incident is ongoing.

This alarming act of vandalism serves as a stark reminder of the threats facing the Great Wall of China. Over the centuries, this monumental structure has suffered from the ravages of time, coupled with inadequate maintenance. As a result, only 8.2 percent of the Great Wall constructed during the Ming Dynasty remains in a well-preserved state. A staggering three-quarters of it languish in poor condition, with nearly a third of the structure having disappeared altogether.

The Great Wall of China, stretching over 21,196.18 kilometers, meanders through 404 towns in 15 provincial regions across northern and central China. It is not just a testament to ancient engineering prowess but a symbol of China’s rich history and cultural heritage.

The incident underscores the urgent need for stricter protections and vigilant oversight of this iconic monument. As investigations continue, the world watches with bated breath, hoping for a swift and just resolution that will reaffirm the commitment to preserving this unparalleled wonder for generations to come.
