Belle the Hippo: A Symbol of Hope and Resilience in Leningrad

Of all the horrors of war, a destitute hippo is one of the last sights you would expect to see. Belle the hippo survived the Siege of Leningrad thanks to her devoted caretaker, Yevdokia Dashina.

In 1941, as the Siege of Leningrad intensified, water was cut off throughout the city, leaving Belle’s pool empty and her skin beginning to dry out. Undeterred, Dashina took it upon herself to care for the struggling hippo. Each day, she would drag a 40-liter barrel of water from the Neva River and diligently rub Belle’s skin with camphor oil. Her tireless efforts eventually paid off as Belle’s skin healed, allowing her to seek refuge underwater during air raids and bombardments.

A Story of Survival

Belle’s story is one of extraordinary resilience and hope amidst the unimaginable hardships of war. Her survival stands as a powerful testament to the human spirit and the profound impact of compassion. Dashina’s unwavering dedication to Belle underscores the enduring truth that even in the darkest times, there is always room for kindness and care.

A Symbol of Hope

Belle the hippo has come to symbolize hope and resilience. Her survival is a poignant reminder that compassion can shine through even the most harrowing circumstances. The dedication of Dashina to Belle’s well-being is a beacon of the human capacity for kindness, illustrating that hope can prevail despite the direst conditions.

A Legacy of Love

Belle’s story also highlights the profound bond between humans and animals. Her survival during such a bleak period is a testament to the enduring power of love and compassion. Dashina’s efforts reflect a deep and enduring legacy of care, reminding us all that kindness and dedication can make a difference, even in the most challenging times.

Belle’s tale is a lasting reminder that, even amid the darkest of times, compassion and hope can thrive.
