Nima Sarikhani, a British amateur photographer, has captured the hearts of wildlife enthusiasts worldwide with his ethereal portrait of a polar bear resting on an iceberg. This mesmerizing image has clinched the prestigious People’s Choice Award in the 59th edition of the renowned Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition.

Selected from a pool of nearly 50,000 submissions, Sarikhani’s serene portrayal of the polar bear garnered an overwhelming 75,000 votes, securing his victory among 24 other finalists chosen by the Natural History Museum in London and an esteemed international judging panel.

Dr. Douglass Gurr, Director of the Natural History Museum, commended Sarikhani’s work, emphasizing its ability to convey both the beauty and fragility of our planet. The photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the intrinsic connection between wildlife and its habitat, shedding light on the profound impacts of climate change and habitat loss.

‘Ice Bed’ by Nima Sarikhani (United Kingdom) | Wildlife Photographer of the Year

Sarikhani embarked on a three-day expedition off the coast of Norway in search of polar bears, eventually spotting a pair against the backdrop of floating sea ice. As the vessel redirected its course toward areas with intact ice, one of the bears ascended a small iceberg under the midnight sky, fashioning a cozy bed for a peaceful slumber.

Expressing gratitude for the prestigious accolade, Sarikhani shared his hopes that the photograph would evoke emotions and inspire action in addressing the pressing issue of climate change. Despite the daunting challenges posed by environmental degradation, Sarikhani believes that his image can instill a sense of hope, emphasizing the collective responsibility to mitigate human-induced damage to the planet.

The winning image, titled “Ice Bed,” captures the essence of wildlife in its natural habitat, inviting viewers to contemplate the delicate balance between humanity and the natural world. Sarikhani’s achievement stands as a testament to the power of photography to raise awareness and ignite conversations about conservation and environmental stewardship.

As the world grapples with the consequences of climate change, Sarikhani’s poignant portrayal of a sleepy polar bear serves as a poignant reminder of our duty to protect and preserve the planet for future generations.
