Florida Man Arrested After Attempting To “Run To London” Across The Atlantic Ocean

In a bizarre and audacious endeavor, a Florida man’s recent attempt to “run to London” using a unique floatation device resembling a giant hamster wheel has landed him in hot water with the authorities.

Reza Baluchi, a 44-year-old resident of Florida, made headlines when he embarked on a remarkable journey across the Atlantic Ocean within a homemade vessel that closely resembled a hamster wheel. His unconventional voyage, however, did not go unnoticed, and it ultimately resulted in his arrest.

The incident unfolded on August 26, approximately 70 miles off the coast of Tybee Island, Georgia, where Reza Baluchi’s peculiar journey was intercepted by the vigilant US Coast Guard. Officials approached Baluchi, requesting his vessel registration, which he claimed to have on board but could not locate. This raised immediate concerns among the crew.

Upon closer inspection, it became evident that Baluchi’s self-made floatation device was kept afloat through an intricate combination of wiring and buoys. The condition of his vessel prompted USCG officers to conclude that he was undertaking an inherently unsafe voyage. They insisted that he disembark from his hamster wheel-like contraption.

In a dramatic standoff, Reza Baluchi resisted leaving his improvised vessel for three days, even allegedly making threats of having a bomb on board, which he would use if anyone attempted to board his unique craft. Eventually, he relented and left the vessel but is now facing federal charges that include obstructing a boarding and violating a captain of the port order.

This incident, however astonishing, is not Baluchi’s first foray into such unconventional oceanic adventures. He has previously attempted similar voyages, all of which ended with his rescue by the Coast Guard. In 2014, an ill-fated trip to Bermuda had to be prematurely terminated when he became disoriented and had to seek directions from local fishermen. Despite warnings from the Coast Guard, Baluchi continued on his journey and ultimately activated his locator beacon roughly 70 nautical miles off the coast of St. Augustine, Florida. These incidents, though impressive in their audacity, hardly suggest a prudent course of action.

Baluchi, undeterred by his past experiences, has remained resolute in his pursuit of an unconventional dream. “I’ll never give up my dream,” he declared to Fox 35, after being towed back to shore following yet another daring voyage. He insists that his ambition is not solely for personal glory but to raise funds for various public service agencies, including the Coast Guard, police department, and fire department, all of whom work tirelessly to ensure safety and assist those in need.

While Reza Baluchi’s adventurous spirit is commendable, it serves as a stark reminder that some dreams may require a bit more grounded planning and a lot less hamster-wheel-powered ambition, especially when attempting to cross the vast and unpredictable Atlantic Ocean.
