High Surge Waves: Police Urge the Public Not to Cross Sinamalé Bridge

In an unusual turn of events, the police have issued a warning urging the public to avoid crossing the Sinamalé Bridge on Saturday due to high surge waves that have been affecting the area. The southwest monsoon season has brought with it its fair share of challenges, and certain areas of Malé, particularly the Henveiru ward and sections of Majeedhee Road, have been prone to flooding. However, today’s surge waves have exacerbated the situation, leading to flooding not only in the Sinamalé Bridge area but also extending to the vicinity of Majeedhee Road.

The impact of these high surge waves has been captured in several videos circulating online, with waves sweeping vehicles off the roads and causing significant damages. The powerful force of these waves has also led to considerable damage to vehicles parked in the industrial area of Malé. In light of this situation, the police have strongly advised the public to refrain from making any unnecessary journeys across the bridge today.

To ensure the safety of residents, authorities have recommended opting for four-wheeled vehicles when crossing the bridge, if absolutely necessary. It is worth noting that motorcycles are the preferred mode of transportation for many Maldivians. However, given the current conditions, it is safer to avoid such vulnerable vehicles when navigating the area affected by the surge waves.

As the city continues to experience these high waves, meteorological experts have recorded wave heights reaching 0.94 meters this afternoon. The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) has issued a white alert from Kaafu Atoll to Addu City, cautioning about the potential for further surge waves in the region. Residents and authorities are advised to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety during this period of increased wave activity.

It is not just Malé that has experienced the impact of these surge waves. Several islands in the central atolls have also reported similar occurrences today. The surge waves are part of the natural phenomenon that comes with the monsoon season, but their intensity this year has been notable.

In conclusion, the high surge waves affecting the Sinamalé Bridge area and other parts of Malé call for caution and vigilance from residents and visitors alike. With the monsoon season in full swing, it is crucial to stay informed about weather alerts and advisories issued by the MET and follow the instructions provided by local authorities. Safety should be the top priority, and avoiding unnecessary risks, such as crossing the Sinamalé Bridge during this period, is of utmost importance. Let us all stay safe and support each other through these challenging weather conditions.
