A 20-year-old man has been arrested as part of an investigation into the alleged abuse of a 13-week-old Cane Corso puppy whose severe injuries shocked veterinary staff.

The puppy, named Lil Redd, was taken to an emergency veterinary clinic after her breeders discovered she had multiple broken ribs, damaged teeth, bleeding from her mouth and head, and was unable to walk. According to the breeders, an experienced veterinarian became visibly emotional after examining the young dog, describing the injuries as among the worst they had encountered in a puppy.

Lil Redd had been rehomed only three weeks earlier after being sold to the man, who had agreed to provide regular updates on her progress. Her breeders, Paige Taylor and Phil Trewick, said communication stopped shortly after the puppy went to her new home.

The situation came to light when the owner contacted them before a scheduled vaccination appointment, claiming the puppy had been injured after a door fell onto her leg. Concerned by the explanation, the breeders located the dog themselves and immediately realized the injuries appeared far more serious than described.

They rushed Lil Redd to a veterinary clinic, where she received urgent treatment. The breeders later said they repeatedly questioned the owner about what had happened. They claim he eventually admitted to striking the puppy after initially insisting the injuries had been caused by an accident.

Durham Police confirmed that a 20-year-old man was arrested in connection with alleged animal cruelty. He was interviewed and later released on bail while investigations continue. Authorities have urged the public to avoid speculation while inquiries remain ongoing.

The puppy has since been returned to her breeders and is recovering at home. Although her condition has improved, veterinarians have warned that some of her injuries could have lasting effects. Family members have also launched a fundraising campaign to help cover veterinary expenses, which have already exceeded £1,000.

The case has sparked widespread concern on social media, with many expressing support for Lil Redd’s recovery and calling for strong action if allegations are proven. It has also renewed discussion about responsible dog ownership, particularly as Cane Corsos have become increasingly popular despite requiring experienced handling, training and long-term commitment.

Responsible Dog Ownership and Animal Welfare
Animal welfare organizations stress that every dog deserves proper care, training, veterinary attention and a safe environment. Large working breeds such as the Cane Corso require experienced owners who understand their physical and behavioral needs. Experts encourage anyone unable to care for a pet to seek help from breeders, veterinarians or animal rescue organizations rather than allowing an animal to suffer.
