Shelter Employee’s Heart Melts When She Catches Two Kittens Holding Paws

Staff at a South Carolina animal shelter were touched by an unexpected display of friendship after discovering two kittens holding paws through the bars of their neighboring kennels.

The heartwarming moment involved Colleen, a 13-week-old kitten currently being cared for by the Humane Society of York County (HSYC), and another kitten named Pedro Pascal.

Colleen first arrived at the shelter with one distinctive feature — she had no tail. While staff were unable to determine exactly how she lost it, they quickly learned that the missing tail had done nothing to slow down her energetic and affectionate personality.

According to shelter workers, Colleen quickly became one of the most social kittens in their care, regularly seeking out opportunities to play and interact with other cats.

One day, while checking on the animals, a shelter attendant noticed Colleen and Pedro quietly resting in neighboring enclosures. Instead of playing, the pair appeared content simply sitting together with their paws touching through the kennel bars.

Staff members said the scene looked almost as if the kittens were forming a small heart shape with their paws.

Although the pair were not littermates, they had clearly developed a close bond during their time at the shelter.

Soon afterward, Pedro found a permanent home through adoption. Colleen, however, remained at the shelter waiting for a family of her own.

Shelter workers describe Colleen as a rare combination of playful energy and affectionate companionship. Fully vaccinated and ready for adoption, she continues to spend her days making friends with the other kittens while hoping someone will soon choose her.

Animal care staff say kittens often thrive when adopted alongside another young cat, as companionship can help support healthy social development and reduce stress.

For now, Colleen continues charming everyone she meets as she waits for the next chapter of her story to begin.

Animal shelters across the United States continue to encourage pet adoption as thousands of cats and kittens wait for permanent homes each year. Experts say early socialization, preventive veterinary care, pet insurance coverage and responsible adoption planning can significantly improve long-term feline health and well-being. Many shelters also emphasize the benefits of adopting bonded pets, which often adapt more quickly to new environments and provide valuable companionship throughout their lives.
