Veterinarian Explains What Pets Want Before They Pass & It’s Devastating

Losing a pet can be as devastating as the grief you experience losing any family member, and some people make the difficult choice to not be in the room when it comes time to say goodbye to their pet.

One veterinarian says that even though it can be tragically heartbreaking to stay with our pets during euthanasia, it’s what our pets want more than anything.

WECB.FM reported, “Recently, Jesse D. posed a poignant question to a veterinarian on Twitter, asking what the hardest part of their job was. The vet responded with a heavy heart, “The most difficult part is seeing elderly or sick animals searching for their owners in their final moments.”

What’s truly disheartening is that, according to this veterinarian, about 90% of pet owners choose not to be in the room when their pet passes away. The vet shared that these owners leave to avoid witnessing the death, not realizing that these final moments are when their pets need them the most.

Okay, let’s all grab the Kleenex before we continue. Staying with your pet when they die is such a hard thing to do, but it really is a wonderful way to honor them in their final moments and make sure they feel as much love as they pass as they have given us during their lives.

Ways To Honor Your Beloved Dog That Has Passed

Losing a dog is one of the most heartbreaking experiences a pet owner can ever have, and there are many ways you can commemorate the life your precious pup lived and all the joy and love they brought you.

Certain parks have a rainbow bridge where dog owners can place the collar or tags of a dog that has passed. This is a lovely way you can remember your pup and pay homage to all the other beloved dogs who have passed.

You can plant a memorial garden in your yard and place a stone or path marker with your pup’s name on it.

You can create a memory book filled with beautiful photos of your dog.

You can light a candle in your dog’s honor on their birthday, holidays, or whenever it brings you comfort.

You can adopt or foster a dog in honor of your pet, or make a donation in their name to your local animal shelter or Humane Society.

Our hearts go out to everyone who is mourning the loss of their precious dog.
