Woman Is Delighted To Find A Wild Fox Sleeping Peacefully On Her Outdoor Sofa

“I was very happy to see him so relaxed.”

For the past few years, UK resident Andrea Uppington has been sharing her garden with an unlikely neighbor — a wild fox who drops by from time to time and has slowly become part of her everyday life in the English countryside.

A Special Bond Between Human and Wildlife

Like most wild foxes, this one remains naturally cautious and skittish. Still, Uppington finds comfort in simply knowing he’s nearby, and she often spots the little clues he leaves behind around her garden.

“He still makes his presence known,” Uppington told The Dodo. “He digs up compost heaps, sleeps in the flower beds and in the sunshine, and buries eggs in the flower borders.”

Uppington has never tried to tame or befriend the fox directly, yet there’s an undeniable sense of quiet hospitality around her home — as if her garden has become a safe little sanctuary he can return to whenever he pleases.

A Surprise Waiting On The Patio

One evening last year, Uppington came home from a night out with friends to find a heartwarming scene waiting for her on the back patio.

When she flipped on the light, she discovered the fox had settled onto her outdoor sofa after a long day of exploring, curled up comfortably among the plush cushions as though it were his own bed.

A Moment Too Sweet To Disturb

“I was surprised he didn’t move when the light was put on,” Uppington recalled. “He just looked very peaceful and in a deep sleep. I was very happy to see him so relaxed. I left him to sleep and turned the patio light off.”

Careful not to disturb his rest, Uppington quietly let him be, allowing him to enjoy his nap undisturbed. By the time she checked the sofa the next morning, the fox had already slipped away to start his day.

Recurring Visits, Left In Paw Prints

Uppington believes the fox still uses her outdoor sofa from time to time — the telltale paw prints left behind are proof enough. And she couldn’t be happier to keep welcoming him whenever he chooses to stop by.

“I enjoy wildlife in the garden,” she said. “He is a joy to observe.”

A Story That Reminds Us Of The Beauty Of Coexisting With Nature

This charming story shows how humans and wild animals can share the same space without fear, built instead on quiet respect and mutual curiosity. A small garden in a quiet corner of the UK unintentionally became a warm, safe refuge for a wild fox — one nap on a garden sofa at a time.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. Is it normal for wild foxes to sleep in gardens or on outdoor furniture? Yes. Urban and rural foxes often seek out sheltered, comfortable spots to rest during the day, especially quiet gardens with soft surfaces like cushions, flower beds, or compost heaps.

2. Is it safe to have a wild fox visiting your garden regularly? Generally, yes. Foxes are naturally shy around humans and rarely pose a threat if left undisturbed. However, it’s best not to feed them by hand or attempt to tame them, as this can alter their natural wary behavior.

3. Why do foxes bury food like eggs in gardens? Foxes are known scavengers and often cache surplus food, such as eggs, in soft soil to eat later. This is a completely normal survival behavior.

4. Should you wake up or move a sleeping wild fox? No. It’s best to leave a resting fox undisturbed and observe quietly from a distance, just as Andrea Uppington did, to avoid startling the animal.

5. How can you tell if a fox has been visiting your garden? Common signs include paw prints, small digging in soil or compost, disturbed flower beds, and occasionally buried food items.

6. Do foxes return to the same resting spots? Yes, foxes often revisit spots they find safe and comfortable, which is why Uppington’s fox continues to nap on her outdoor sofa from time to time.
