Donkey Who Just Wanted A Friend Finally Meets His Soulmate After 10 Years

After spending a decade in complete isolation, a rescued donkey named Jack has finally found the companionship he had been missing all his life. His remarkable friendship with another rescued donkey, Rooster, is giving animal lovers a powerful reminder of just how important social bonds are for animals.

Jack arrived at Rewild Refuge Farm Sanctuary last autumn after living alone for 10 years at a large event venue. During that time, he had no contact with other donkeys and endured years of neglect, including painful hoof trimming procedures and a lack of proper emotional care.

According to the sanctuary’s executive director, Kristen McNab, Jack had largely been forgotten. Although staff were initially warned that he could be aggressive toward people, they quickly discovered that he was simply shy and deeply uncertain after years of isolation.

Not long after Jack’s rescue, another donkey named Rooster arrived at the sanctuary. Rooster, too, had been rescued from an abusive environment and had also spent years without meaningful companionship.

The moment the two donkeys met, they showed an immediate interest in one another. Staff soon realized that neither animal had interacted with another donkey for more than a decade, making their first encounter especially emotional.

Donkeys are naturally social animals that thrive on close relationships and often form lifelong friendships. For Jack and Rooster, meeting another member of their own species was an entirely new experience after years of loneliness.

McNab said it appeared as though the pair instantly recognized something familiar in each other, as if they finally realized they were no longer alone.

Within days, the two became inseparable. They now spend their time exploring the sanctuary together, running across fields, playing tug-of-war with traffic cones, digging in the dirt, and staying close wherever they go. Even when separated by a fence, they reach out to nuzzle one another.

Their growing bond has transformed Jack’s life. After years without companionship, he now appears calmer, more confident, and emotionally secure thanks to the constant presence of his new friend.

For the sanctuary staff, watching the friendship develop has been one of the most rewarding parts of both donkeys’ recovery, demonstrating the extraordinary impact that compassion, rescue, and companionship can have on animals recovering from trauma.

Why Social Bonds Matter for Donkeys

Animal behavior experts say donkeys are highly intelligent and deeply social creatures that rely on companionship for their emotional well-being. Long-term isolation can contribute to stress, anxiety, and behavioral problems, while positive social interactions can significantly improve confidence and overall welfare. Stories like Jack and Rooster’s highlight the importance of responsible animal care, rescue organizations, and providing rescued animals with environments where they can build healthy relationships and recover from past neglect.
