Cats typically live until the age of 16, but there is one shelter cat named Gus who defies the odds. He’s 19 years old, healthy, and about to embark on a new chapter in his life. Gus was brought to the Humane Society of Catawba County (HSCC) in North Carolina last month after his previous owner was unable to care for him due to a change in their work schedule. The no-kill animal shelter probably thought Gus would spend his final days there, but the elderly cat ended up finding his “perfect match” with Penny, 101.
Penny’s family was looking for an elderly cat to entertain the 101-year-old. “The adopter’s family contacted us and asked to adopt a senior cat for their mother,” said Jane Bower, executive director of HSCC. “She had recently lost her cat, and despite receiving a stuffed cat, she was unhappy because it didn’t purr.” Penny, we don’t blame you!
Given Gus and Penny’s ages, the animal shelter was initially hesitant to proceed with the adoption. However, once Penny’s family confirmed that they would care for the cat on their mother’s behalf, there was no reason not to give it a shot, and the adoption was quickly finalized. There was no need to be concerned; Gus quickly settled in and began “eating like a horse.” Bower called the elderly couple a “match made in heaven.”
“This beautiful adoption has filled our hearts,” HSCC wrote on Facebook. “Our 19-year-old (133 human years) Great-GrandPAW has found the loving arms of his new mamma, who is 101.” “Congratulations, Gus-Gus!” the team added. I wish you the best of days, watching squirrels and sharing your love and purrs!”
Gus and Penny’s touching story demonstrates that you are never too old to make new friends.
Gus is 19 years old. He was the shelter’s oldest cat until he was adopted by Penny, a 101-year-old woman.
He now spends his days watching squirrels and snuggling with Penny.
